Prepend is not a word

Prepend is not a word. Please don’t use it in the API. https://gradle.org/docs/current/javadoc/org/gradle/api/file/RelativePath.html#prepend(java.lang.String...)

Prepend is a made up word that sounds like it should be the opposite of append. It is not.

The word you are looking for is prefix.

What makes you think it’s not a word? There seems to be strong precedent for its use.

Well, technically it IS a word but it’s a verb meaning to think carefully about something beforehand, literally to “weigh” its consequences in one’s mind.

See here for a good explanation https://www.cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2001-07/msg01544.html

And here also

And here for the usage of the term compared to prefix https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=prepend%2Cprefix&year_start=1800&year_end=2008&corpus=18&smoothing=3&share=&direct_url=t1%3B%2Cprepend%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2Cprefix%3B%2Cc0

So… the Oxford Dictionary says it’s correct but some guy ranting on the cygwin users mailing list say it’s not.

I wonder who I’ll trust…
