This sounds like Root project configuration takes too long on Mac, but perhaps with the added complexity that the VPN is taking over the DNS resolution process. If you don’t already an entry like this, and adding it doesn’t help, you may need to investigate if you have any options to influence how your particular VPN solution affects the resolution process.
